BICSI IN101: Installer 1 Blended Training

This is a blended course with hands-on/application-focused components that provides an entry-level attendee with the background knowledge and skills needed to function safely and effectively on the job and in accordance with the requirements, recommendations, and best practices outlined in the 8th edition of the Information Technology Systems Installation Methods Manual (ITSIMM).

IN101 Blended Course Information

  • How Does a Blended Course Work?

    This course is split into two parts: 

    Part 1: Self-Paced, Online Training 

    Before attending the in-person, hands-on workshop, you will complete 15 modules of self-paced online training via BICSI Connect. BICSI recommends starting this portion of the training at least four weeks before the first day of the hands-on workshop. You must successfully complete all requirements of Part 1 prior to attending Part 2. 

    Part 2: Hands-On, Instructor-Led Workshop 

    In the instructor-led workshop, you will watch demonstrations and practice doing the following hands-on tasks: 

    • Terminate a 66-block 
    • Terminate a 110-block 
    • Strip and identify cable pairs 
    • Terminate an 8P8C connector 
    • Terminate an F connector 
    • Terminate at a wall outlet 
    • Interpret the results of a wire map and continuity test

  • What if I Cannot Complete Part 1 by the Scheduled Due Date?

    You will need to contact BICSI at [email protected] or 813-979-1991 to arrange a transition into a new cohort. 
  • Why Should I Attend?

    The BICSI Installer 1® (INST1®) designation is the start of a rewarding career path full of continuing advancement opportunities, and this training course can help prepare you for the exam. 

    In this course, you will learn essential information as an entry-level installer: 

    • Professionalism at the work site 
    • Transmission fundamentals 
    • Safety practices and procedures 

     

    You will also gain an advantage over other installers by getting hands-on practice in: 

    • Pulling cable 
    • Performing multiple IDC terminations (66, 110, LSA, and BIX) 
    • Terminating coaxial cable 
    • Performing basic testing of copper cabling installations 
  • Is the INST1 Exam Included in the Course Fee?

    The Installer 1 (INST1) exam is not included in the course fee. You must apply for the exam separately.

  • Who Should Attend?

    This program is ideal for: 

    • Individuals with little or no cabling experience 
    • Anyone wishing to pursue a career in ICT cabling distribution 
    • Individuals seeking basic knowledge of and skills in cabling installation 
    • Anyone planning to take the BICSI Installer 1 exam (apply for the exam separately) 
  • What Are the Knowledge and Skills Requirements?

    Participants must be able to: 

    • Distinguish between different colors 
    • Possess manual dexterity to complete fine motor tasks 
    • Stand for extended periods of time (e.g., 30 minutes) 
    • Climb ladders 
    • Lift and carry items weighing ≈22.7 kg (50 pounds) 


  • What Prerequisites and Preparation Are Required?

    Little or no experience is needed to attend this class. Some students may benefit from completing the online ICT Fundamentals series through BICSI Connect prior to attending. 

    However, BICSI strongly recommends reading the Information Technology Systems Installation Methods Manual (ITSIMM) before coming to class and/or taking the exam. 

    For students who plan to take the exam, BICSI recommends that examinees spend at least 50 hours studying the ITSIMM
  • What Course Materials Are Required?

    To successfully participate in the virtual classroom training, each attendee is required to have: 

    • Laptop or desktop that meets the system requirements noted here 
    • Microphone and speakers (headset recommended) 
    • Standalone webcams and/or mobile device camera for the instructor-led portion of the class 
    • Internet connection - 1 Mbps or better (broadband recommended) | 3G connection or better (Wi-Fi recommended for VoIP audio) 
    • Information Technology Systems Installation Methods Manual (ITSIMM), 8th edition, print or electronic. Click here to purchase*.
    • Personal or prescription safety glasses
    NOTE: Each student must purchase the manual and exam separately. 

    *The ITSIMM is not included in the course fee. 

     

    What BICSI will provide

    For the instructor-led portion of the class, BICSI will provide the materials and tools for students to complete the hands-on activities.

  • Can I Earn Credit?

    Yes, you can earn 35 continuing education credits (CECs) toward an existing BICSI credential recertification requirement upon successfully completing this program.

    Note: In addition to this required manual, BICSI will also provide you with an activity workbook that gets shipped separately.

  • Confirm Your Shipping Address

    For this virtual class, additional classroom materials are shipped out at least two weeks prior to class for domestic students and four weeks for international students.  Please email [email protected] and confirm your preferred shipping address for these additional materials.  You can expect delivery of two shipments – 1) a workbook, and 2) activity consumable materials.

    Note: Installation students will also need to use a set of their own tools or have access to the tools listed here. More details can be found at bicsi.org/vct. If prospective students do not have access to these tools, we strongly recommend that they attend an in-person offering to get the full benefits of this program.

  • Apply to Take Exam

    Because hands-on exams are completed virtually on the last day of class, we encourage you to complete your exam application here at least two weeks before participating in your virtual class.  This will ensure that we can ship out the necessary testing materials needed to utilize with your tools to participate in your virtual hands-on exam testing.
  • Accessing Your Course

    Be on the lookout one week prior to the start of class for two key things:

    1. A confirmation email from your instructor.
    2. Login instructions for your virtual classroom will be sent the Wednesday prior to the first day of class.

     
    Zoom must be installed on your computer to attend this Virtual Class.
